Conceptual inspiration: the isle of wight, 1970
"progressivo" is not a mere chandelier, but a monumental light installation celebrating broken rules, structural complexity, and pure, unfiltered experimentation. The profound inspiration stems from the legendary emerson, lake & palmer concert at the isle of wight in 1970: a historic milestone of raw, overwhelming energy where classical music structures were deconstructed and reinvented by the power of progressive rock. Italian artist and designer dario nasuti captures this exact emotional and mathematical tension through an aesthetic that is simultaneously geometric and fluid, rigorous yet deeply liberated. Nasuti blends over 30 years of high-fashion drape-modeling and haute couture experience with a radical plastic and pictorial approach, shaping a suspended artwork that continuously evolves in space.
the metamorphosis of wool: geometry, enforcement, and crystallization
the realization of the five sculptural shades requires days of complex, multi-stage manual processing in the artist’s studio in parma, italy:
enforcing cubic shapes upon wool: starting from 100% pure wool panels, the textile is kneaded and deeply saturated in a special water-based iron paint. To enforce a sharp, cubic geometry upon the textile matter, the artist stretches the wet fabric over solid wooden cubes, literally nailing it down at strategic focal points. This rigorous process generates regular angular folds and symmetrical creases along the edges, creating a dramatic contrast between the rigid box shape and the original softness of the wool.
the ceramic-effect finish: once the drying process is complete and permanent structural rigidity is achieved (the wool hardens entirely, becoming as solid as plastic to the touch), the artist executes a multi-colored finish free-flowing and dissolved by hand with paint thinner. This masterful technique triggers an astonishing vitreous surface glaze, granting the wool the visual essence of glazed ceramics or molten glass. The interior of the shades is meticulously spray-finished in charcoal gray—a functional design choice to absorb side glare and strictly focus the downlight.
lighting engineering & chromatic scenography
the artwork cascades dynamically. Nasuti intentionally selected 5 woven textile cords in 5 different colors for the pendants to disrupt visual monotony and reference the rich chromatic experimentation of 1970s progressive rock synthesizers. The 40 cm mirrored ceiling canopy features 2 strategically placed recessed led spotlights, operating with dedicated internal transformers: their downward beams illuminate the shades from above, emphasizing their brilliant surface sheen, raw texturized layers, and painted gradients. Five large pinecone-shaped led bulbs (6w each, 15 cm diameter, 20 cm length) complete the piece, emitting a warm light that pulses from the heart of each textile sculpture.
