Produced in 1816, the print reflects the growing European fascination with zoology, exotic species, and Enlightenment-era scientific classification. The composition features several elongated “worm lizards” identified in German and Latin as Chalcides tetradactylus and Chalcides monodactilus, accompanied below by vividly colored salamanders including the striking “Erd-Salamander” and aquatic salamander species. The arrangement across the sheet is highly balanced and decorative, with the animals isolated against a soft cream background that emphasizes their delicate forms and subtle hand coloring. Brodtmann was one of the pioneering masters of natural history lithography during the early 19th century. His works are admired for combining scientific observation with artistic elegance, making them highly collectible among enthusiasts of natural history, zoological illustration, and early lithographic printing. The restrained palette and refined linework seen here are characteristic of the finest European scientific illustration of the period. This lithograph possesses a strong Wunderkammer or cabinet-of-curiosities aesthetic and works exceptionally well in both traditional and modern interiors. The combination of unusual reptilian subjects, minimal composition, and warm aged paper tones gives the piece a distinctly sophisticated decorative appeal. It is particularly suitable for libraries, studies, curiosity collections, boutique interiors, or gallery walls focused on natural history themes. Original natural history prints of reptiles and amphibians from this early period are increasingly sought after, especially examples with strong hand coloring and visually appealing compositions. The black-and-orange salamander near the lower left corner adds a vivid focal point that enhances the overall decorative impact of the sheet. The print is an original antique lithograph from 1816, not a reproduction. All items we offer are authentic period works of art over 100 years old. The piece is sold unframed; any framed images are shown for presentation and interior inspiration only and may not always be to scale with the original. Condition report: Good antique condition with age-related toning, scattered foxing, and minor wear to the margins consistent with age. Original hand coloring remains attractive and well preserved. Framing tips: This lithograph displays beautifully in dark walnut, black lacquer, or lightly gilt frames paired with a wide ivory or oatmeal mat. Its refined scientific subject and warm natural tones make it particularly suitable for libraries, studies, eclectic interiors, Wunderkammer displays, or sophisticated gallery walls.
