A column-shaped wooden stand from the Wilhelminian era, dating from around 1870–1890, crafted from solid hardwood with a warm brown finish. The fluted shaft, the capital-shaped transition to the round shelf, and the stepped round base with profiled rings combine to create a formally cohesive, clearly proportioned overall form.
Historical Context:
In the bourgeois living spaces of the Wilhelminian era, column-shaped display stands—also known as pedestals or torchères—were a standard feature of representative interiors. They served to elevate and display busts, vases, sculptures, and, in the late 19th century, potted plants and decorative objects. They were typically placed in salons, reception rooms, and entryways. The columnar form drew on the classical repertoire of forms, which was applied to nearly all types of furniture in the Historicist period. Column stands of this design were turned in Central European woodworking shops both as individual pieces and in small series.
Features:
– Fluted column shaft with uniform axial fluting along the entire length of the shaft
– Stepped round base with multiple profiled rings, which visually delineates the transition between the base and the shaft
Design:
The stand follows the classical-historicist formal canon: a slender, fluted shaft echoes the formal language of ancient column architecture and transitions into the round, profiled shelf surface via a capital-shaped extension. The base is structured in multiple tiers, lending the object visual weight at its lower edge. Ornament and construction are one and the same—the fluting serves as both a load-bearing and structuring element. The overall form is vertically oriented, calmly proportioned, and visually cohesive.
Function:
Historically: A display stand for decorative objects—busts, vases, sculptures, or potted plants—in stately living rooms of the late 19th century. Today: Can be used as a shelf or display element in living, entryway, or work areas; suitable for plants, sculptures, or decorative objects.
Dimensions:
Height: 93 cm / Diameter of shelf: 28 cm
Material and condition:
Material: Solid wood, turned; warm brown finish with visible wood grain Condition: Preserved in a manner appropriate to its age; wormholes visible across the shaft, shelf, and base; a few scratches and signs of wear present on the shelf surface. Professionally inspected and restored by Kastellan; stable.
