The painting depicts Croda Rossa d’Ampezzo (Hohe Gaisl), viewed from the valley floor near the village of Carbonin, at the starting point of the route leading to the Prato Piazza plateau. The composition is structured through a rigorous articulation of perspectival planes: in the foreground, the rocky riverbed and low vegetation introduce a diagonal line that guides the viewer’s gaze toward the central mass of the Dolomite mountain range.

The hand of Paul Schuler, an Austrian painter active in the first half of the twentieth century, is characterized by a dense and analytical application of paint. In the rocky faces, color is applied with thick, textured brushstrokes that convey the complex structure of dolomite stone, enhanced by the contrast between sunlit areas and shadowed gullies where snow deposits persist. The chromatic palette balances the greens of the conifer forests with variations of grey and blue that define the mountain’s volumes. The diffuse brightness of the sky, punctuated by cloud formations, lends the entire scene an atmospheric clarity typical of midday hours at high altitude. The work bears the signature “Paul Schuler” in the lower left corner, while an autograph inscription on the stretcher on the reverse reads “Hohe Gaisl.” See less
