This public health or sanitary wood warning sign is from 1900–1935.
Clues point to that period: The wording “Positively No Dumping” and “Per Order Board of Health” fits municipal/public health enforcement language common in the Progressive Era. The typography is commercial sign-painter lettering typical of the early 1900s. The boards are machine-sawn rather than hand-planed. The fasteners are early slotted wood screws and hand-forged rose head nails. The painted surface and construction suggest a utilitarian roadside or lot sign rather than a Victorian storefront sign. The heavy craquelure, oxidation, grime, and shrinkage cracks are genuinely old rather than modern decorative reproduction.
The graphic appeal is strong, it is large at approx 26" × 20"x1.75, has a good primitive folk-art look, original painted surface, and is a desirable black/red typography. Hanging wire added.
Condition: holes, stains, heavy craquelure, oxidation, grime, and shrinkage cracks.
Perfect for a bathroom!
