The Story & Artistry
Originally modeled by Remington in 1903, The Mountain Man represents a shift in the artist's career toward more fluid, impressionistic, and gravity-defying compositions. Remington was deeply fascinated by the early fur trappers of the 1830s and 1840s—individuals who preceded the cowboys and military men he frequently depicted.
Every detail, from the long-barreled rifle resting across the lap to the coiled rope and buckskin fringe, pays homage to the historical realism Remington fought so hard to preserve as the Old West was vanishing.
