With our absolute highest compliments Bay Colony Antiques proudly offers this exceptional antique chest of drawers. This tall chest would have originally belonged to a gentleman during the earliest part of the 19th century who could afford to commission a master cabinet-maker. The quality of this chest speaks to the refinement of this era where craftsmanship and artistry could be found in every detail within the household.
The front of the dresser features four brilliantly figured tiger maple drawers that are all joined with hand-cut dovetails, fitted with brass escutcheons, and built with wide growth chamfered drawer panels. There are two wonderfully grain painted panels that simulate a crotched mahogany grain with a remarkable feather pattern that rest above expertly turned half columns. The case is finished with a primitive red wash paint and the entire tall chest is raised on four turned feet in a black paint. We believe this chest was originally made in Central Pennsylvania or south of that region in The Shenandoah Valley of Virginia two hundred years ago.
Quite often there can be more learned about an antique by examining the back of the piece than any other area. This chest has chamfered backboards which have naturally oxidized over two centuries that are allowed to float within a framework so that the case may adjust to changes in seasonal humidity. Instead of nails or glue, the tall chest features a series of small pinned dowels that lock each joint together in the most efficient and strongest way possible. This subtle detail is an indication of a superior level of craftsmanship which most chests are not made with. The chest of drawers measures 45 1/4" wide x 20 3/4" deep x 46" tall.
