Capture the vibrant, sun-drenched atmosphere of the French Riviera with this original Mid-Century modern gouache painting on paper titled "Le Port de Cannes" by highly collected French master Robert Savary (1920–2000). This exceptionally lively harbor scene depicts a bustling French port filled with stylized sailboats, figures on the docks, and a distinctive lighthouse standing against a misty coastal horizon.
The piece is brilliantly executed in Savary's signature energetic, Fauvist-inspired color blocks and fluid brushwork. It comes housed behind glass in a substantial, vintage carved gilt wood frame with a classic cream-colored fabric mat. It is hand-signed in pencil by the artist in the lower-left corner.
Provenance & Gallery History: This piece features exceptional, historically significant gallery labeling on the reverse. The backing bears an import label from the prominent Baldwin Galleries, alongside handwritten documentation tracing its origins directly to Galerie 65 in Cannes, France. Galerie 65 was a legendary modern art venue on the French Riviera during the mid-20th century, famous for mounting definitive exhibitions for titans like Pablo Picasso, RaoulDufy, and Fernand Léger. This direct connection to Cannes provides an airtight, romantic history that greatly enhances its collectible value.
Artist BackgroundRobert Savary was a renowned French colorist and figurative master associated with the influential "Young Painting" (Jeune Peinture) movement of the New School of Paris. Rejecting pure abstraction, Savary dedicated his career to celebrating the joy, light, and beauty of everyday life, nature, and coastal landscapes.
A highly decorated figure in 20th-century French art, he won the prestigious Prix de Casa Velázquez (1948) and the renowned Prix de Rome (1950). His works are held in notable European institutional collections.
