Dating to the early 20th century, the set represents a regional tradition of chair making that drew on both Louis XV forms and the vernacular joinery of provincial workshops.
Each chair features a unique cresting rail carved with paired volutes and scrolling terminals, above two shaped ladder-back rails with scalloped lower edges that graduate in width toward the seat. The back uprights are square-sectioned and unornamented, lending the design a verticality that balances the decorative upper register. The front legs are cabriole in form with carved knees and scroll feet, while the rear legs taper in the square Provincial manner. The seat rail is shaped with a simple scallop to the front.
The generously sized, upholstered drop-in seats have been covered in a contemporary asymmetric geometric fabric by Christopher Farr Cloth in tones of ivory, taupe, aubergine, and chocolate. This fabric choice connects the period frames to a modern interior without compromising their character. The fabric is in clean, presentable condition. See less
