Rich in decorative detail and regional topography, the map originates from the celebrated atlas Toonneel des Aerdrycx, one of the most luxurious and influential atlases of the 17th century. The map centers on the strategically important territories surrounding Sedan and Donchery near the Ardennes frontier, an area of considerable political and military importance during the early modern period. Numerous rivers, forests, villages, roads, and fortified settlements are engraved with exceptional clarity, while delicate original hand coloring highlights provincial boundaries and waterways. The composition is enhanced by a large ornamental title cartouche in the lower left corner, an elaborate royal coat of arms in the upper right, and a finely engraved distance scale. The decorative balance and refined engraving exemplify the artistic sophistication that established the Blaeu family as Europe’s leading cartographic publishers. Sedan itself held major strategic importance in French and European history and became known as a fortified Protestant stronghold during the 16th and 17th centuries. The surrounding Ardennes landscape, rivers, and border territories added further significance to the region during numerous continental conflicts. Produced in Amsterdam during the height of the Dutch Golden Age, Blaeu maps were prized throughout Europe by aristocrats, merchants, diplomats, and scholars for both their geographic accuracy and decorative beauty. Today, maps of smaller regional territories such as Sedan and Donchery are increasingly sought after for their rarity, intimate scale, and strong decorative appeal. The original hand coloring remains attractive and balanced, with soft pink, green, and yellow outline color complementing the dense engraved detail. The map displays beautifully and is particularly suitable for libraries, studies, château interiors, historic properties, or refined gallery walls. Special note: This is an original 17th-century map, not a reproduction. All items we offer are authentic period works of art over 100 years old. The map is sold unframed; any framed images are shown for presentation and interior inspiration only and may not always be on scale with the original. Condition report: Good antique condition with original center fold as issued. Minor age-related toning and occasional light spotting mainly in the margins. Attractive original hand color and a strong engraving impression. Wide margins preserved. Please study image carefully. Framing tips: This map displays exceptionally well in dark walnut, black lacquer, or lightly gilt frames paired with a wide ivory or oatmeal mat.
