Oil and two small metal plates affixed to cardboard, with original frame
signed "Ernest Kalnins" on the reverse, somewhat faintly
Size: 63.5 x 69.8 cm (without frame) / 66 x 72.4 cm (with frame)
Provenance: Gift of the artist to a private collection (Lower Saxony)

Ernest August Kalnins (20th century):
Artist and architect in New Zealand (Christchurch).
Ernest Kalnins was married to the dancer Irina Kalnins (1919–2003), who came to New Zealand via Austria in 1949 and established the Kalnins Ballet Theatre in Christchurch.
In 1965, Kalnins designed Clifton Hill House, an award-winning modernist house in Sumer, Christchurch.
