This expressive devotional figure displays the characteristic stylized features of regional Gothic religious carving: elongated proportions, simplified facial modeling, carved crown, and remnants of original polychromy in earthy red, blue, cream and dark pigments.

The sculpture was reportedly recovered from an old church in the Pyrenean region after a flood many decades ago. A handwritten provenance note discovered inside the hollowed back cavity references Caussou in Ariège, France, and dates from 1985.

The piece survives in a highly weathered and fragile state with extensive traces of age, worming, losses, erosion and structural wear consistent with centuries of exposure and devotional use. These alterations contribute to its remarkable archaeological and sculptural presence.

Particularly striking are the surviving medieval paint layers and the deeply textured surface patina, giving the object a powerful wabi-sabi and museum-like character.

An evocative and authentic Gothic fragment suitable for collectors of medieval art, religious sculpture, folk art and brutalist or rustic interiors.
