iconic underwood model no. 5 typewriter with a spanish keyboard, manufactured around the 1910s and marketed by g. Truniger s.a.
the underwood no. 5 is considered the most successful typewriter in history and became an absolute benchmark for subsequent models in terms of design and functionality. Production began around 1900, reaching over 2 million underwood no. 5 typewriters before ceasing in the 1930s. It features a mechanism called "front strike," revolutionary when introduced as it finally allowed the user to see the text while typing. Later underwood models were superficially modernized but retained the same basic mechanism. It has a spanish qwerty keyboard.
the logos of the brand and its distributor in spain are complete and visible, both above the keyboard and on the carriage. The number 5 is marked on both sides of the bottom bar. The keyboard consists of circular keys with light characters on a black background, reinforced with beveled rings. A large label printed on the back of the machine details the successive patents for the model up to the date of its manufacture, approximately 1917, as well as the manufacturer's name.
the underwood no. 5 holds significant historical importance, having set the paradigm for mechanical typing with its innovative "front-strike" mechanism, allowing typists to save time by monitoring their typing in real time. Its introduction also solidified the qwerty layout as a universal standard. On a social level, this machine spurred the democratization of office work, facilitating the mass entry of women into the professional workforce. The no. 5 became an icon of the first half of the 20th century, defining bureaucratic modernity and communication in the workplace. Underwood's influence on the manufacture of other typewriters continued until 1959, when olivetti began acquiring the company, a process that lasted until 1963.
