This original wmf ikora table lamp from the 1930s is an exceptional example of german modernism, combining the clean lines of the bauhaus with the softer, streamlined influences of art deco. The generously sized, disc-shaped shade with its sculpturally graduated dome creates a striking silhouette and lends the lamp an almost futuristic presence that remains timeless. The minimalist design, consisting of a circular base, a slender stem, and the seemingly floating shade, reflects the functional design principles of early modernism.
the surface displays a rare, warm metallic tone, somewhere between satin nickel, champagne, and light brass, which appears different depending on the light and retains its characteristic patina of age. The lamp features two bulbs with original brass sockets, creating an even and pleasant distribution of light beneath the wide shade. Of particular note is the preserved original fabric-covered cable with its period-correct switch—an authentic detail that further enhances its collector's value. The lamp is in very good overall condition. Only slight signs of age-related wear, fine scratches, and minimal patina on the shade bear witness to its history and do not detract from its overall appeal.
the lamp was manufactured by württembergische metallwarenfabrik (wmf), one of the most important german producers of high-quality metal goods and design objects of the early 20th century. With its ikora line, wmf developed a distinctive design language from the late 1920s onward, combining craftsmanship, innovative metal finishing, and modern design. Today, ikora objects are among the most sought-after designs of the german art deco and modernist periods.
the design is attributed to the circle of wmf ikora designers, which was significantly influenced by paul haustein. His work combines the clarity of modernism with the decorative elegance of art deco and exemplifies the design quality of wmf's production during this time. Today, original wmf ikora lamps of this type are rare and particularly sought after by collectors of bauhaus, art deco and early industrial design.
