Produced in 1816 by the renowned Swiss natural history artist Karl Joseph Brodtmann, the print exemplifies the fascination with zoology, exploration, and exotic wildlife that swept through Europe during the late Enlightenment and early Romantic era. Brodtmann is celebrated as one of the great pioneers of natural history lithography. His works combined scientific precision with decorative artistry, resulting in images that appealed equally to scholars, collectors, and connoisseurs of interior decoration. The present composition is particularly attractive for its rhythmic arrangement of the coiled snakes across the sheet, creating an almost abstract decorative quality while still preserving anatomical realism. The warm ochres, olive greens, creams, and reddish-brown markings remain visually rich and highly suitable for display. The upper serpent, labeled “Boa Canina,” is shown with elegant looping curves and dramatic patterning, while the lower “Boa Constrictor” features intricate rosette markings and an open-mouthed defensive pose. The carefully engraved scale textures and subtle hand coloring demonstrate the high production standards associated with early lithographic natural history works. Early reptile illustrations from this period are increasingly sought after by collectors of natural history art, Wunderkammer-inspired interiors, scientific illustration, and cabinet-of-curiosity decoration. This print also works exceptionally well in modern interiors due to its graphic composition and muted earth-tone palette. It displays beautifully either individually or grouped with other zoological or botanical works from the period. The print is an original antique lithograph from 1816, not a reproduction. All items we offer are authentic period works of art over 100 years old. The piece is sold unframed; any framed images are shown for presentation and interior inspiration only and may not always be to scale with the original. Condition report: Good antique condition with age-related toning, scattered light foxing, and minor marginal wear consistent with age. Original hand coloring remains attractive and well preserved. Framing tips: This lithograph displays exceptionally well in dark walnut, black lacquer, or lightly gilt frames paired with a wide ivory or oatmeal mat. Its dramatic natural history subject and warm coloration make it particularly suitable for libraries, studies, eclectic interiors, Wunderkammer displays, gentleman’s clubs, or sophisticated gallery walls.
