Elegant and sculptural pair of Murano glass wall lights designed by Ercole Barovier for Barovier & Toso in the 1940s. Each applique is composed of a beautifully molded clear glass leaf, richly textured with deep veining and organic relief work that softly diffuses the light. The glass has a remarkable presence even when unlit, while illuminated it reveals warm amber reflections and the extraordinary depth typical of Barovier production from this period. The refined leaf silhouette and the subtle asymmetry of the hand-worked details give the pieces a poetic and highly decorative character. The glasses are in excellent vintage condition, with no cracks or losses observed. The original brass mounts are also preserved. They are quite simple and visibly marked by time, with oxidation, irregularities and signs of age consistent with authentic period hardware. The brass sheet used is notably thin and lightweight — a detail often encountered in Italian lighting from the era. These mounts were frequently adapted and drilled at installation, reflecting the artisanal nature of production in the 1940s, when lighting was still made and assembled in a far less standardized way than today. In our opinion, once mounted, the modesty of the hardware disappears entirely and the extraordinary beauty of the Murano glass leaves becomes the true focus. A rare and atmospheric pair of Italian modernist sconces combining organic form, craftsmanship and the timeless elegance of Murano glass. This piece is attributed to the mentioned designer/maker.
