The architecturally structured body, with its profiled cornice, side pilasters, and recurring medallion ornament, creates a formally cohesive and harmoniously proportioned overall composition. Historical Context: The single-door mirrored cabinet was a standard feature of 19th-century bourgeois bedrooms and dressing rooms. The combination of storage and a full-length mirror met the growing desire for representation among the bourgeoisie without imitating the aristocratic splendor of earlier eras. Cabinets of this type were produced in France and German-speaking countries alike and were found in well-to-do households. The use of solid walnut with a natural grain was characteristic of this style; the formal references to classical architectural elements—pilasters, cornice, and plinth—lent the piece of furniture dignity and order within the living space. Features: Single-leaf door with a full-surface mirror and rounded corners, framed by a profiled semicircular molding. Integrated drawer in the base with original lock and a congruent medallion ornament that echoes the motif of the frieze. Design: Louis-Philippe style, France or Central Europe, circa 1850–1870. The design follows an architectural principle of order: the stepped cornice with chamfered corners, the side pilasters with profiled capitals, and the recessed base on octagonal, faceted feet vertically divide the body. The circular medallion ornament on the frieze and drawer front is a stylistically coherent recurring element. The lines are classically restrained; ornamentation is present but limited to a few carefully placed accents, without decorative overload. Function: Formerly used for storing linens, textiles, and clothing in the bedroom or dressing room; the door mirror served for daily grooming. Today: Usable as a wardrobe, linen cupboard, or storage unit in the bedroom, living room, or hallway; the four shelves allow for flexible use. Dimensions: Height 211 cm × Width 110 cm × Depth 47 cm. Material and condition: Body and door made of solid walnut with natural grain; back panel and interior shelves made of softwood (visible inside). Several moldings were professionally reproduced and added by Kastellan; interior shelves are new. The original door mirror has a visible flaw (damage to the mirror surface, due to age). Structurally sound; overall condition commensurate with age and a mature patina. See less
