A single-door mirrored cabinet from the Louis-Philippe period, dating from the mid- to late 19th century. The architecturally structured body, featuring a moulded cornice, side pilasters and a recurring medallion motif, results in a formally cohesive, harmoniously proportioned overall composition.
Historical context:
The single-door mirror cabinet was a standard feature of 19th-century middle-class bedrooms and dressing rooms. The combination of storage and a full-length mirror met the middle classes’ growing need for a sense of prestige without imitating the aristocratic pomp of earlier eras. Cabinets of this type were produced in both France and German-speaking regions and were found in well-to-do households. The use of solid walnut with a natural grain was characteristic of this style; the formal references to classical architectural elements – pilasters, cornices, plinths – lent the piece dignity and order within the living space.
Features:
Single-leaf door with full-surface mirror and rounded corners, framed by a moulded semi-circular profile. Integrated drawer in the plinth area with original lock and a medallion ornament matching the shape, which echoes the motif of the frieze. Louis-Philippe style, France or Central Europe, circa 1850–1870. The design follows an architectural principle of order: the stepped cornice with bevelled corners, the side pilasters with moulded capital zones, and the set plinth on octagonal faceted feet divide the body vertically. The circular medallion ornament on the frieze and drawer front is a stylistically coherent recurring element. The lines are classically restrained; ornamentation is present but limited to a few deliberate accents, without decorative overload.
Function:
Formerly: Storage of linen, textiles and clothing in the bedroom or dressing room; the door mirror was used for daily grooming. Today: Can be used as a wardrobe, linen cupboard or storage unit in the bedroom, living room or hallway; the four shelves allow for flexible use.
Dimensions: Height 211 cm × Width 110 cm × Depth 47 cm
Material and condition:
Body and door in solid walnut with a natural grain; back panel and interior shelves made of softwood (visible inside). Several mouldings have been professionally reproduced and fitted by Kastellan; interior shelves newly made. The original door mirror has a visible flaw (damage to the mirror surface, due to age). Structurally sound; overall condition appropriate to its age with a mature patina.
