Massive oak desk with a putti facade taken from a mariage coffer made in the louis xiii periode (17th century). The louis xiii item has often been referred to as the “henri ii style” by antique dealers since the 19th century. In rural france, a young married couple would begin their married life with nothing but their “wedding chest” as furniture. It was, therefore, a piece of furniture that held both symbolic and practical significance. This façade features a design typical of the louis xiii style: the massive oak structure is highly ornate, with heavily molded panels and a decoration of sculpted mascarons (small winged faces known as putti since the italian renaissance). The columns and projecting pilasters lend a monumental appearance, which harmonizes with the overhanging cornice and the molded base. The 19th-century cabinetmaker who restored this front panel preserved the solid appearance of the chest while lightening the structure with simpler side panels. Finally, on the desk side, six large side drawers are complemented at the top by three narrow drawers, useful for storing small items. The key can be used on the three upper drawers.
