This striking late 19th-century Chinese Taoist/Folk Religion altar statue depicts a youthful warrior deity (most closely identifying with the protector Prince Nezha), beautifully hand-carved from a single block of wood.
Seated upon an ornate dragon throne base, the figure is rendered in traditional Southern Chinese/Taiwanese style with layers of lacquered gesso, detailed polychrome painting, and genuine gold leaf gilding.
Crucially, this antique example comes complete with its original removable spear accessory, which fits perfectly into the raised right hand. The front hand cradles a divine urn vessel. The back of the robe is solid (no consecration chamber) and features an intact circular crest motif. It features a wonderful, authentic aged patina with gentle craquelure and surface wear that highlights its historic temple or domestic devotional use.
A solid-backed piece highly characteristic of family home altars (Kimsin) from the Southern Chinese Minnan or Taiwanese carving traditions.
A superb addition to any collection of Asian antiquities or Eclectic/Chinoiserie interior design.

The spear slots smoothly into the pre-drilled cavity of the raised right hand, which is an exceptional and rare survival for a wooden figure of this age. The statue shows consistent age, patina, and slight paint wear, verifying its originality. less
