This is an original mid-century marine oil painting, executed as a contemporary homage after the famous composition by renowned maritime illustrator Carl G. Evers. The artwork depicts the historic 19th-century racing yacht America navigating heavy seas under full sail against a dramatic, churning ocean.
The 100-foot schooner America is one of the most famous vessels in maritime history. Designed by George Steers and launched in New York in 1851, the ship revolutionized yacht design with its sharp, concave clipper bow and steeply raked masts. On August 22, 1851, it defeated 14 British ships in a race around the Isle of Wight, winning the Royal Yacht Squadron’s 100 Guineas Cup. This historic victory prompted the renaming of the trophy to the America's Cup, which remains the oldest international sporting trophy in the world.
This composition is based on the work of Carl G. Evers (1907–2000), a German-born artist who studied at the Slade School of Fine Art in London before emigrating to the United States in 1947. Evers became one of America's most prominent 20th-century commercial maritime illustrators, celebrated by collectors and historians for his highly accurate, structurally precise depictions of working vessels, ocean liners, and historic sailing ships. His work was regularly commissioned for major national publications like Yachting and the Saturday Evening Post, as well as by the U.S. Naval Institute.
The painting is presented in a brushed aluminum frame and is signed lower right.
