Antique Academic French Beaux Arts charcoal drawing of the classical marble relief Nike Adjusting Her Sandal. Executed on cream wove paper, the study is signed and inscribed in the lower left corner: “École des Beaux-Arts de Rennes – Le Briquit.” This work is typical of French art academies in the late 19th century, where students reproduced Greco Roman sculptures to master proportion, anatomy, and drapery.
The original marble relief, carved circa 410 BCE, is attributed to the Temple of Athena Nike on the Acropolis in Athens and represents the goddess of victory, Nike, in the act of fastening her sandal.
