This very fine antique Persian Sarouk Feraghan rug, measuring approximately 3'4" x 5'1" and dating to prior to 1880, is an exceptional and highly collectible example of 19th century Western Persian weaving. The rug reflects the refined artistry and technical excellence associated with the finest Feraghan workshops, while also possessing the elegant decorative character that has made antique Sarouk Feraghan rugs among the most admired Persian carpets ever produced.
The composition displays an unusually restrained and sophisticated field design composed of delicate vertical linear motifs and subtle repeating geometric ornamentation set upon a soft ivory-beige ground. The quiet elegance of the field creates a remarkable sense of refinement and spaciousness, allowing the beautifully articulated border system to frame the composition with tremendous visual strength.
Particularly striking is the richly ornamented midnight navy border filled with highly stylized floral and geometric motifs rendered in shades of pale sky blue, ivory, soft camel, blush rose, and muted walnut tones. The border possesses a distinctly architectural quality and creates dramatic contrast against the subtle interior field.
The rug’s palette is exceptionally refined and beautifully aged, featuring soft ivory, parchment beige, faded indigo, pale sky blue, muted celadon, walnut brown, and delicate blush accents. The natural vegetable dyes have mellowed gracefully over nearly a century and a half, giving the rug the soft luminous patina that collectors prize in authentic 19th century Persian rugs.
The weaving is notably fine and precise, with a thin, supple handle indicative of high-quality craftsmanship and superior materials. The back reveals a tightly woven structure and excellent drawing clarity, characteristics associated with finer Feraghan production of the late 19th century.
The rug appears to be in very good condition for its age, preserving its elegant presentation and collectible integrity while showing the natural character expected from an authentic antique carpet of this period. Its unusually subtle field design, refined coloration, fine weave, and early date make it especially appealing to sophisticated collectors and designers seeking understated yet highly decorative antique Persian rugs.
Comparable examples of this age, refinement, and artistic quality would reasonably carry a retail value in today’s market in the range of approximately $12,000 – $20,000 retail, with especially strong appeal due to the rug’s rare understated design, fine weave, elegant border work, and authentic pre-1880 age.
