Christian Dior book from The Metropolitan Museum of Art 1996 Exhibition
"... fashion comes from a dream..." Christian Dior's quote that opens this volume.
An exceptional hardcover book that delves into the world of Monsieur Dior, at the cusp of his earth shattering 1947 collection, which Harper's Bazaar's era defining editor Ms. Carmel Snow poignantly baptized as The New Look, never before nor since has fashion so aptly described a time.
Masterfully written by Harold Koda in conjunction with Richard Martin, co-directors of the Museum's Costume Institute at the time.
This First Edition photo book features stunning images of pieces from the museum's private collection, all shot in situ by Karen L. Willis.
The photograph's and close-ups of the embroideries and details of the dresses captivate the story of Monsieur Dior's iconic designs which forever changed the course of fashion in general... the writers emphasize the difficulty of analyzing Dior's frame of mind at the time, the intervening decades have irrevocably distanced them from his circumstances and his world... thus they offer via this book and accompanying exhibition neither a biography nor a retrospective, they chose to offer us Monsieur Dior, as a genial creator.
Additionally, they suggest that his conceptualization of a woman, must be understood as a campaign of hope and optimism, in which, in fact, the women of his time participated in willingly. Desperately, and successfully erasing the haze of the years of war.
Published by The Metropolitan Museum of Art, this book is a valuable addition to any fashion enthusiast's collection, it showcases the beauty and artistry of Dior's creations.
The book offers a unique insight into the fashion industry, as I related, every piece photographed has been a gift to the Costume Institure from stylish and beneficent New Yorkers, names of whom are listed below the photographs and the generous donations from Monsieur Dior himself...the "Diors" represent but one of the vast archives of the Met's Costume Institute, no other in the world equals it in the depth and breadth of it's holdings.
