Up for sale is this lovely vintage cat print by Girard Goodenow, published in 1965. This print, one of several of his prints of cats we are currently selling, is in excellent condition and is custom-matted in an acid-neutral 16" x 20" mat, a standard frame size for framing economically with a ready-made frame.
About the artist:
Girard Goodenow (1912-1984) was the son of Kyōhei Inukai, a Japanese immigrant who became a popular society portrait painter in 1920s New York, and his first wife Lucene Goodenow, a writer, painter and sculptor. Their three sons, who were raised under their mother’s family name, would take up careers as artists and designers in midcentury America. After studying at the Art Students League during the 1930s, Girard (often known as “Gig”) worked as a graphic designer and commercial artist, working as a regular illustrator for Women’s Day magazine during the years from 1939-1943, as well as producing for other magazines. In the years after World War II he travelled to Brazil, and did a series of paintings of California and Texas missions that was exhibited in Oklahoma City in 1948.
In later years, he achieved a certain reputation in social circles as a man-about-town. As an artist, he became especially known for his animal portraits. Reviewers in the New York Times and elsewhere singled out Goodenow’s illustrations for praise. In March 1965 Girard Goodenow provided a series of nine oil paintings of cats for Woman’s Day, and this print is a reproduction of one of those.
