Wide cove-molded wood frame with distressed antiqued gilt finish, fine ribbed striations, applied beaded outer molding, and an ornate scrolling foliate sight edge
Provenance: Estate of a Collector, La Quinta, CA
Original oil painting by Carl G. Bray depicting a luminous Southwestern desert landscape with flowering desert shrubs, distant mountain formations, and expansive open sky rendered in a soft impressionistic palette. Executed with expressive brushwork and thick impasto texture, the painting captures the quiet atmosphere and shifting light of the American desert with a distinctly plein-air sensibility.
The composition features pale desert sands, muted sage and lavender tones, and layered mountain forms beneath a broad sky filled with broken cloud patterns. The textured surface and painterly handling give the work strong visual movement and depth. Presented in an ornate carved gilt wood frame that complements the painting’s warm tonal palette and classic Southwestern aesthetic.
Biography:
Born in Prague, Oklahoma on May 17, 1917. His work reflects strong influence from California and Southwest plein-air traditions, emphasizing atmosphere, light, and broad natural forms rather than tight realism. Bray studied art at Miami College and, after moving to the Coachella Valley in southern California in 1936, continued in Works Progress Administration art classes. He also studied with Maynard Dixon and Russell Swan. Over the years he was a popular lecturer-demonstrator for college classes, television shows, and art groups. For 50 years he had an art gallery on Highway 111 in Indian Wells, CA. He died there on July 23, 2011. His work includes depictions of the desert and its smoke trees, and won over 100 awards.
Member: La Jolla Art Ass'n; Desert Art Center, Palm Springs (pres. 1966-67); Palm Desert Palette Club; Society of Western Artists.. Bray’s paintings are appreciated primarily for their decorative and regional appeal, especially among collectors drawn to classic desert landscapes and impressionist-influenced Western art.
