This original signed print is THE POPLAR, a landscape depiction of the Thun, Switzerland lakeside town.

Published in London by Winsor and Newton, this print is part of the collection that features 30 large-scale lithographic plates showcasing meticulous, firsthand artistic studies of British and European tree species. Every plate acts as an explicit structural and anatomical study, focusing on how specific species grow, branch, and interact with light.

The portfolio contains dedicated profile plates for iconic varieties, in addition to this lithograph, The Poplar, the collection also includes The Birch, The Weeping Willow, The Pollard Willow, The Sycamore, The Walnut, and The Larch.

George Barnard was the Professor of Drawing at Rugby School and a former pupil of the landscape painter James Duffield Harding. He advocated passionately for close observation of environmental elements. He published several other foundational instruction manuals on landscape drawing, including "The Handbook of Foliage and Foreground Drawing" (1853) and "Drawing from Nature: A Series of Instructions in Sketching" (1865).
