Hand-knotted in wool, this exceptional pair of 3x3 square rugs from France represents an extraordinarily rare 1925 French Art Deco commission by Jean Burkhalter for Pierre Chareau. Featuring abstract painterly forms and soft Mediterranean hues, these twin rugs were conceived for a modernist seaside villa in Corsica, and stand among the most collectible examples of early French modernist textile design.
On the Design:
Designed in 1925 by Jean Burkhalter for Pierre Chareau, these extraordinarily rare pairs of French Art Deco rugs belong to a celebrated suite of five commissioned for a seaside villa in Corsica. Preserved in remarkable condition, the pair stands among the most sophisticated expressions of modern French decorative arts, reflecting a pivotal moment when architecture, painting, and textile design converged into a singular avant-garde language.
Burkhalter’s compositions depart radically from the formal symmetry of earlier European carpets, embracing abstraction with an almost painterly sensibility. Fluid organic forms drift across the surfaces like fractured landscapes or sweeping brushstrokes, rendered in tonal gradients of powder blue, slate, ivory, sand, and muted blush. The effect evokes both the maritime atmosphere of the Mediterranean and the experimental visual language emerging from Parisian modernism during the interwar years. Influences of Robert Delaunay’s Simultaneism are especially evident in the rugs’ marbled movement and shifting chromatic depth, while the spontaneity of the forms anticipates later abstract expressionist tendencies.
The historical significance of these rugs lies equally in their provenance. Jean Burkhalter, trained at the École des Arts Décoratifs and later associated with Atelier Primavera, was among the foremost textile innovators of the Art Deco era. His collaboration with Pierre Chareau—one of the great architects of French modernism—produced some of the period’s most daring decorative works, conceived not merely as furnishings but as integral architectural elements within space. Both deeply collectible and art historically important, these rugs exemplify the rare union of French craftsmanship, modernist experimentation, and decorative sophistication that defined the highest level of Art Deco design.
