Eugenia Perpetua Butler was one of the most important early conceptual artists.
She studied at the University of California, Berkeley.
In the fall of 1969, she participated in the legendary exhibition “Konzeption / Conception,” curated by Konrad Fischer and Rolf Wedewer at the Museum Morsbroich in Leverkusen—one of the world’s first exhibitions of conceptual art.
In 1970, she participated in the exhibition “Concept Art” at the San Francisco Art Institute, and in 1972, she participated in Documenta 5 in the section “Individual Mythologies.” Also represented with performances (“Trans-Parent Teacher’s Ink” (with Paul Cotton) and “Prince of Peace”) during the first week of Documenta.
1985–2001: Taught at the University of California, Los Angeles, the Southern California Institute of Architecture, Los Angeles, and California State University, Northridge.
