Executed in an elegant French cartographic style, the map combines geographic precision with refined engraving and delicate period coloring, making it both historically significant and highly decorative. The engraving bears the imprint “Tardieu Sculp.”, linking the work to the celebrated Tardieu family of French engravers, among the most respected cartographic engravers active in Paris during the late eighteenth century. The inscription “Andre scrip.” indicates the original draughtsman responsible for the cartographic design. Together these names place the map firmly within the sophisticated tradition of Enlightenment-era French mapmaking associated with the great hydrographic and colonial atlases of the period. Saint-Domingue occupies a particularly prominent position on the map and reflects the immense importance of the French Caribbean colonies in the eighteenth century. Jamaica, then under British control, is shown in remarkable detail, while Cuba stretches across the upper left portion of the composition with numerous coastal place names and navigational references. The surrounding waters contain islands, shoals, anchorages, and maritime details intended for both geographic understanding and colonial administration. The engraving is exceptionally sharp with strong plate definition and a highly attractive original hand-colored outline wash in soft blue, yellow, green, and pink tones. The restrained coloring enhances the elegant clarity of the composition without overpowering the engraving itself. The large open sea areas and balanced arrangement of the islands give the work a refined and highly displayable appearance, particularly suitable for coastal interiors, libraries, Caribbean collections, or historical map walls. Maps of the Caribbean remain among the most sought-after subjects in antique cartography due to their connection with colonial trade, maritime history, piracy, sugar plantations, and European imperial expansion. This example stands out for its crisp impression, excellent visual balance, and desirable French eighteenth-century engraving quality.
