A large-scale Hydrastone chalkware urn in warm taupe, with twin handles and relief-molded cherub figures in the Greco-Roman classical tradition wrapping the body. At 21 inches tall, a true statement piece. The surface has the matte, slightly chalky quality characteristic of Marwal's casting work.
Marwal Industries Inc. was founded in Brooklyn, NY in the mid-1960s by Romanian immigrant Marcel Walters, who named the company from the first syllables of his own name. The company produced chalkware pieces made with Hydrastone — a mixture of plaster of Paris and gypsum — casting from rubber molds taken from objects of historical significance sourced from antique shops around the world.
