Their silhouette is generous and enveloping, with a deep seat and a high, slightly inclined backrest, designed to offer comfortable support. Shapes & decorations : - structure the seat, wide and deep, is designed to comfortably accommodate several people. The padding is firm yet comfortable. The slightly concave backrest conforms to the shape of the back and ends in rounded, curved armrests. These armrests are padded and upholstered in velvet. The overall design is substantial yet harmonious, with gentle curves that soften the imposing appearance of the piece. - upholstery and trim the fabric, a shimmering burgundy-crimson red, is enhanced with subtle patterns. The velvet displays variations in tone depending on the light, creating a rich and textured visual effect. The sofas are complemented by silk cushions, coordinated with the main upholstery. - base and spacer the six front and rear legs are turned in a baluster shape and stained dark. The legs are connected by a stretcher which reinforces the stability of the piece of furniture. Condition and patina : the velvet is in good condition, showing some signs of wear, which testifies to the age of the piece of furniture and adds to its charm. Atmosphere and use : these sofas evoke the literary salons or cabinets of curiosities of the 17th century. Their style, both imposing and inviting, makes them centerpieces for: - a classic living room or library, combined with wood paneling, gilt-framed mirrors and aubusson rugs. - baroque or neo-baroque decoration, with gilding, crystal chandeliers and draperies. - a historical setting (castle, private mansion), where they could be placed alongside other period furniture (chests, cabinets, game tables). The louis xiii style : a transition between the renaissance and classicism, this style is characterized by a mixture of geometric rigor and abundant decoration, reflecting the influence of flemish and italian arts during the reign of louis xiii.
