Three-door oak wardrobe with an oval bevelled mirror, stylistically situated between late Art Nouveau and reform-oriented furniture design, dating from around 1910–1925. The calm vertical structure, the understated ornamentation and the gently curved cornice create a stylish and balanced overall effect in the room.
Historical context:
Wardrobes of this type were a standard feature of middle-class bedrooms and dressing rooms in the early 20th century. Whilst decorative Art Nouveau was becoming increasingly minimalist, furniture with clearer lines and a more constructively oriented design emerged. Characteristic features include the emphasised verticality, sparingly used decorative elements, and functional features such as large mirrored doors for use in the bedroom or dressing area. The use of solid woods and robustly crafted interior fittings met the standards for durable domestic furniture of the time.
Features:
- Large mirrored door with all-round bevelled edges
- Clothes rail and shelves inside
- Continuous beaded ornamentation on the cornice and plinth
Design:
The wardrobe combines elements of late Art Nouveau with the more functional design principles of the Reform furniture movement. The gently curved crown contrasts with the strictly vertical structure of the door and side panels. The narrow frames, the minimalist brass fittings and the oval-framed mirror section create a sense of calm without decorative overload. The sturdy conical feet visually stabilise the proportions and clearly anchor the piece horizontally.
Function:
In the past, the cabinet served as a central storage unit for clothes and linen within middle-class bedrooms. Today, it remains suitable as a wardrobe or linen cupboard, as well as a stand-alone piece within historic, classical or minimalist interiors.
