These type of tables were commissioned by Liberty & Co and hand-carved by fishermen in Japan. The firm imported Middle Eastern and Oriental goods which embodied the ideals of the Art movements in the late 19th Century. Some of these tables were flat packed and required putting together after their long journey to Liberty’s Regent Street store in London. The table is hand carved with leaf decoration and it is in very good original condition. It has been recently restored in the structure as well as surface. Kamakura-bori is a form of lacquerware from Kamakura, Japan. It is made by carving patterns in wood, then lacquering it with layers of color. See less
