Designed in 1925 by Jean Burkhalter for Pierre Chareau, these extraordinarily rare French Art Deco rugs belong to a celebrated suite of five commissioned for a seaside villa in Corsica. Preserved in remarkable condition, the work stands among the most sophisticated expressions of modern French decorative arts, reflecting a pivotal moment when architecture, painting, and textile design converged into a singular avant-garde language.

Burkhalter’s composition departs radically from the formal symmetry of earlier European carpets, embracing abstraction with an almost painterly sensibility. Fluid organic forms drift across the surface like fractured landscapes or sweeping brushstrokes, rendered in tonal gradients of powder blue, slate, ivory, sand, and muted blush.
