Originally purchased from Scully & Scully as an exclusive; handcrafted in Pennsylvania by Madison Square Furniture (maker's brass plaque affixed to underside). From Scully & Scully, the Park Avenue purveyor of fine traditional furnishings since 1934, this handcrafted solid mahogany Hepplewhite extension dining table is the kind of piece that quietly solves a real problem: it lives as a slim 21½″ drop-leaf console against a wall, opens to an intimate breakfast table for four, and extends to a full 86″ banquet table seating eight to ten. One table, three lives.
Beautifully crafted in the American Federal tradition with ribbon-stripe mahogany throughout, square tapered Hepplewhite legs with finely incised reeding down the front faces, and classic spade feet. The two demilune drop leaves swing up and lock on hand-fitted brass mechanisms; three additional removable leaves slide in on heavy-duty Watertown aluminum table slides (U.S. Pat. 2872251 / Canada Pat. 629913) — the gold-standard hardware specified on the finest American extension tables of the period. Solid brass dual-pull table locks engage adjoining sections securely. The hand-rubbed mahogany finish carries a soft, warm satin sheen.
The current Scully & Scully equivalent retails for $4,250.
Dimensions
Closed as console (leaves dropped, no extensions): 86″ L × 21½″ W × 29″ H
Fully extended (drop leaves up + 3 leaves inserted): 86″ L × 38″ W × 29″ H
Condition
Very good preowned condition. Structurally sound with all hardware, slides, and brass locks operating smoothly. All three original leaves present. Some light surface scratches and faint scuffs visible under direct light, consistent with gentle household use — easily improved by a light polish or refinish. No splits, cracks, veneer lifting, or structural concerns. Original finish.
Styling
A genuinely versatile piece suited to traditional, transitional, coastal, or English Country interiors. Pairs beautifully with shield-back, Hepplewhite, or Chippendale-style dining chairs. Equally at home in a formal dining room, a generous entry hall, behind a sofa as a console, or in a sunroom as a flexible breakfast table.
