The composition balances earthy ochre, muted blue and pale surfaces with an open painterly touch, allowing the forms to remain slightly dissolved in light rather than sharply defined. The brushwork carries a calm immediacy, giving the scene both presence and softness.

The village-like motif has a quiet structural rhythm, with built forms arranged almost as planes of colour, characteristic of Nordic modern painting of the period.

Vidar Bäckman was born in 1910 in Bräcke, Jämtland, and died in 1985 in Östersund. He was a painter and draughtsman, largely self-taught, with studies also undertaken in Stockholm and France. Bäckman held solo exhibitions in Östersund, Umeå, Örebro, Varberg and at Liljevalchs in Stockholm, and also participated in numerous group exhibitions throughout Sweden. His works are represented in Östersund Museum, in the mural "Sommar" in Varberg, and in county, municipal and other public buildings in Jämtland.

Both painting and frame are preserved in very good vintage condition, with only light age-related wear consistent with time.
