This Maddox Colonial Chinoiserie Secretary Desk features a distinctive slant-front silhouette. Produced by the respected American manufacturer Maddox Furniture, this mid-to-late 20th-century statement piece reflects the traditional Georgian Colonial style blended with East Asian-inspired ornamentation.
This piece was originally purchased by a Chinese man who immigrated to Hawaii. It was purchased from his grand daughter who now lives in Arizona.
This piece is a Maddox Table Company of Jamestown, NY brand.
Design & Visual Details
Finish: A rich, highly polished black lacquer base finish.
Artistry: Elaborate, multi-colored hand-painted Chinoiserie landscape scenes.
Slant Front: The top drop-down lid features a central traditional motif depicting figures, a bridge, architecture, and mountains.
Accents: Vibrant gold leaf detailing, rust-red trim bands, and subtle green highlights framed by continuous gilt borders.
Layout & Functionality
Upper Desk Lid: The top locking panel opens downwards supported by internal lopers to reveal a compact writing surface. The interior houses traditional mail sorting cubbies and smaller organizational drawers.
Lower Chest Section: Features three deep exterior storage drawers aligned vertically with integrated keyholes.
Base: Rests firmly on a low base ending in classic, bracket-style Georgian corner feet embellished with matching gold filigree

- Black lacquer paint is notorious for showing blemishes. This piece certainly has a few, however, for one of this age, … moreBlack lacquer paint is notorious for showing blemishes. This piece certainly has a few, however, for one of this age, its in remarkable condition. I've photographed the major blemishes. It appears that at some time there was a repair done, as there is black overspray on all the drawers. I've left these in place, so if the new owner wishes to have a professional buff out the blemishes, they will know what has been done to it in the past. I have priced this piece so there is room to hire a professional if that's what the new buyer prefers. All the drawers work beautifully, all the hardware is in tact.
