This signed Marc Chagall lithography comes framed and with a Certificate of Authenticity (COA) #210/500. A limited-edition print produced in 1988, "Tree Over Village" features a portrait orientation measuring 27x32 inches set off in a beautiful gold-toned frame. A colorful piece dominated by vivid reds and yellows, the art exudes an impressionistic style and incorporates spiritual themes as well as a love of nature and art, making it a valuable addition to any collection. Pencil signed and numbered.
Chagall (1887-1985) was a Russian/Belarusian/French artist known for his vivid, colorful imagery; a gift for painting a picture that told a story; and his creations often had a religious undertone with a nostalgic focus on his Jewish upbringing and childhood life. He was one of nine children and grew up in Belarus where his craft began and his notoriety grew.
Considered a visionary ahead of his time, Chagall was prolific throughout his career with more than 1,000 paintings as well as other pieces of art such as stained glass, tapestries and ceramics. During the Holocaust, he and his wife left France along with other artists, who were extradited to the United States (by an organization today known as the International Rescue Committee). Chagall gained world renown and was one of the most popular and celebrated artists of his time - and still today. He is known for his vibrant colors and imagery; a fascination with clowns, acrobats and circus life; as well as childlike excitement for life. In addition to his paintings, he was commissioned to design and craft stained glass windows for the Metz Cathedral, the Hebrew University's Hadassah Medical Center in Jerusalem, the United Nations Building and the Art Institute of Chicago. He died at the age of 97 - the last surviving master of European modernism and left a lasting legacy.
Novelist Andre Malraux is quoted as saying Chagall was "the greatest image-maker of this century. He has looked at our world with the light of freedom and seen it with the colours of love."
And Picasso, a friend and fellow contemporary, concurred: "When Henri Matisse dies, Chagall will be the only painter left who understands what color really is. I'm not crazy about his roosters and asses and flying violinists, and all the folklore, but his canvases are really painted, not just thrown together. Some of the last things he's done in Vence (Venice) convince me that there's never been anybody since Renoir who has the feeling for light that Chagall has."
Overall, this painting is a visual narrative open to interpretation and rich with expressions of love, nature, a dreamlike state and a nod toward earlier moments and memories. Chagall's works are treasures that you'll enjoy for years to come - A true talent extraordinaire! We're rooting for these lovely bouquets to go to a loving home where they will be equally cherished with every gaze.
