This museum level figurative expressionist abstract painting is by well known and listed artist Morris Broderson (American, 1928-2022). An oil painting on canvas measuring 71” high X 77” wide, executed in 1956 and titled; “Family at Hollywood Park Racetrack.” Signed and dated in the front lower left. Plus, it is framed in a 18k gold leaf frame by a professional framer in near excellent condition.
Provenance;
From the estate of the artist to Stanford University in 2004, to collectors and art dealer, David and Jeanne Carlson, Rancho Mirage, CA.
Artist’s Background;
Morris Broderson was born in 1928 in Los Angeles, California. Deaf at birth, he attended Berkeley School for the Deaf (CSD) where he began dabbling in art. An aunt noticed his unusual artistic abilities and gave him support. He won a scholarship to the Pasadena Art Museum, a stint that led to his education at the University of Southern California where he focused strictly on drawing - no colors or other media were allowed until he had mastered drawing.
Throughout his twenties, Broderson supported himself as a janitor at local racetracks and as a photographer's assistant until his first solo show in Laguna Beach. It is apparent that Broderson executed this painting having worked in his early days at a racetrack, thus the composition and paintings title.
Broderson's work ranges from oils, watercolors and pastels to lithographs. He was well known for incorporating embroideries, Asian motifs, porcelain, lace and floral designs into his artwork. A few of his paintings depict his deafness through fingerspelling.
Broderson's paintings can be seen at the Smithsonian, National Museum of American Art, Museum of Fine Arts in Boston and San Francisco Museum of Modern Art to name a few.
This painting is guaranteed to make an impression impact in any home for the discriminating affectionito and or collector.
