A pair of 19th-century bronze guardian lions from Thailand. These majestic lions, called Singha, are mythological creatures from Buddhist tradition, tasked with guarding the entrances to sacred places to ward off evil spirits. They are depicted in all their ferocity, with flaming manes and gaping mouths with sharp fangs. We can see the meticulously crafted decorations on their chests, typical of Khmer-style craftsmanship. These works were placed, usually in pairs, on the sides of the stairways of temples and royal palaces as spiritual guardians.
This particular pair of Singha comes from the Turin villa of designer Pino Lancetti, founder of the eponymous brand.
