The composition captures a small mountain settlement resting beneath monumental rock formations, rendered through expressive brushwork and softened evening light. Broad planes of green, violet-grey and muted earth tones create a restrained yet luminous Nordic palette.

Smedberg balances structure and spontaneity throughout the surface. The cottages appear almost embedded within the landscape itself, while the angular fencing and layered mountain forms introduce a subtle modernist geometry to the scene.

Painted during the mature period of the artist’s career, the work reflects the Scandinavian fascination with the Norwegian mountain landscape that became central to several Nordic modernists during the mid twentieth century.

Signed and dated lower right. The reverse retains the original handwritten inscription: “Sommarkväll vid Kleivi, Telemark Norge, Fritz Smedberg 1957.” Presented in its original robust wooden frame with beautifully aged patina.

Very good vintage condition with only minor age-related wear to the frame visible in photographs.
