The Duke and Duchess of Windsor were at the center of a historical crisis that rocked the world in the thirties. In 1936 Kind Edward VII abdicated his crown rather than give up "the woman he loved". After escaping to France he married Wallis Simpson and American double divorcee. And assumed the newly created titles of Duke and Duchess of Windsor. Spending the balance of their lives ruling high society from Villa Windsor - their home in the Bois de Boulonge at the center of Paris. Post the Duchess'' death in 1986 Mohammed Al-Fayed signed a new 50 year lease on the house and purchased its contents. With a plan to create a museum - he orchestrated a flawless restoration.
Post completion he subsequenltly decided to auction off its contents In 1997. Sadly the auction by Sotheby's in New York was rescheduled to February 1998. Due to his son's and Princess Diana's tragic deaths in an automobile accident. Consisting of over three thousand lots - this auction offered an unprecedented glimpse into the private world of two global style icons. The result being record breaking prices.
