Antique Mahogany Framed Aquatint Print Famous British Racehorse Stockwell
Celebrating the legendary British Thoroughbred racehorse.
Artwork Overview
• Subject: The chestnut horse
Stockwell, famously known as "The Emperor of Sires" due to his massive success at stud.
• Artist: Painted by Harry Hall (1814-1882), one of the most prominent nineteenth-century English equestrian artists.
• Inscription: The print identifies him as the winner of the 1852 St Leger Stakes and notes he was "The
Property of the Marquis of Exeter".
Composition: It depicts the horse on the racing field with his jockey up, wearing the distinctive blue and white striped silks of the Marquis of Exeter.
Other horses and jockeys appear walking in the distant background.
