Högön is a small island close to Juniskär, the island where Berg lived and worked for long periods. It was here, in relative isolation, that he developed his highly personal modernist expression.

Berg’s bold simplifications of form and expressive use of colour led contemporaries to nickname him “Juniskär’s Picasso,” a reference not to imitation but to his role as a radical, independent modernist working far from the established art centres. Berg’s work bridges Nordic landscape traditions with modernist and cubist-inspired simplification. His background as a sailor and extensive travels, particularly in Southern Europe, are reflected in the confident brushwork and expressive palette.

The composition is constructed from bold, geometric colour fields that suggest landscape, structures, and pathways rather than depicting them literally. Strong planes of colour in earthy reds, blues, greens, and ochres create a dynamic yet balanced surface, conveying depth and rhythm through abstraction.
