For many years, antique and vintage frames sourced from estate sales, auctions, private sellers and forgotten interiors played an important role in Tawny Chatmon’s art practice. Rather than treating frames as neutral presentation devices, she approached them as historical objects carrying memory, meaning and historical ideology. Often, the original paintings found within those frames were carefully removed so the antique frames themselves could be repurposed to house the artists works.
The removed paintings, such as this one, were carefully held onto and are now being offered to collectors who may wish to bring them into a new home and setting. Signed “K. Westland,” the artwork depicts a countryside scene featuring still water, a barn or cottage, trees and an an expansive sky. A solitary figure in red moves stands bottom center of the landscape feeding a scattering of chickens. The painting’s muted greens, smoky browns, and pale blues blend gently into one another.
The painting appears to be oil and shows visible signs of age and character consistent with its history. The reverse reveals the raw canvas backing, exposed stretcher bars, age-related markings, and staples from previous framing and mounting.
