Hand-knotted in wool and originating circa 1910-1920, this 9x14 antique Persian Bidjar rug is a masterwork of early 20th-century weaving. Part of Rug & Kilim’s Antique collection, it reflects a historic monument that honors a massive medallion composition.
On the Design:
This antique Persian Bidjar is a triumph of geometric classicism, operating as a powerful, symmetrical essay on the stately diamond medallion. The composition is anchored by a massive, stepped diamond field in a vibrant terra-cotta hue, which serves as a high-contrast stage for the central floral filigree. This medallion-within-a-medallion logic is a hallmark of the Bidjar workshop tradition, providing an intellectual depth that balances the rug’s immense 9x14 scale. Rather than a simple floral repeat, the ivory corners are densely populated with Herati-style blossoms and serrated leaves, creating a framed garden effect that pushes the visual focus toward the core.
The chromatic architecture of the piece is exceptionally well-preserved, pitting warm, sun-baked reds against a cool, atmospheric palette of sage and slate. The technical execution of the wool pile has matured into a storied, distressed patina, where the natural abrash adds a painterly movement to the field that only a century of age can produce. The border planning is equally rigorous, featuring a rhythmic procession of rosettes and palmettes that act as a structured frame for the kinetic energy of the field. It is a premier choice for a grand estate library, a formal dining hall, or a high-concept gallery, bringing a sense of aristocratic permanence and iron-clad Persian history to the floor.
