This exceptional antique Persian Mohajeran Sarouk rug, measuring approximately 3'5" x 4'11" and dating to around 1920, is a superb example of the highly refined Mohajeran weaving tradition from Western Persia. Rugs of this caliber are admired for their luxurious wool quality, elegant drawing, and richly saturated coloration, qualities that distinguish the finest Mohajeran Sarouks from ordinary Sarouk production.
The rug displays a dramatic and highly artistic allover floral design set upon a deep midnight navy field of remarkable richness and depth. The composition is filled with gracefully scrolling vines, flowering palmettes, stylized boteh forms, and elaborate floral sprays arranged in a beautifully balanced symmetrical layout. The absence of a dominant medallion allows the intricate floral ornamentation to flow continuously across the field, creating tremendous visual movement and sophistication.
Particularly striking is the extraordinary contrast between the dark navy ground and the vibrant floral motifs rendered in shades of ruby red, coral, ivory, rose, celadon green, sky blue, and soft salmon. The luminous coloration combined with the velvety wool pile gives the rug a jewel-like appearance that is especially desirable among collectors and interior designers.
The border system is exceptionally refined, featuring densely ornamented floral rosettes and palmettes that frame the composition beautifully while reinforcing the architectural balance of the rug. The finely woven back and supple handle clearly indicate superior craftsmanship and high-grade wool.
The wool quality is especially noteworthy, possessing the soft lustrous texture for which antique Mohajeran Sarouks are famous. The pile appears full and beautifully preserved, and the rug presents in near-perfect to perfect condition, which is increasingly rare for authentic examples from this period.
Because of its fine weave, luxurious wool, sophisticated navy field, highly decorative allover design, and outstanding state of preservation, this rug would reasonably carry a retail value in today’s market in the range of approximately $10,000 – $18,000 retail, with especially strong appeal to collectors seeking elegant and high-grade antique Persian Mohajeran Sarouk rugs with exceptional decorative presence.
