The engraving presents an expansive vision of Persia and the wider Middle East during the Safavid era, extending from Anatolia and the eastern Mediterranean across Mesopotamia and Armenia to Central Asia and the Indian Ocean. Cluverius was among the most influential geographical scholars of the early modern period, regarded as one of the founders of historical geography. His works combined classical sources with contemporary geographic knowledge, and his maps remained highly respected and widely reissued throughout the 17th century. This example reflects the intellectual atmosphere of the Dutch Golden Age, when Leiden emerged as one of Europe’s leading centers of cartographic and scholarly publishing. The map is richly engraved with dense geographical detail and dramatic mountain ranges rendered in the bold pictorial style characteristic of 17th-century Dutch cartography. Cities, rivers, deserts, and caravan routes are carefully identified throughout Persia, Armenia, Assyria, Babylonia, Arabia, and adjacent territories. The Caspian Sea, Persian Gulf, and eastern Mediterranean are prominently featured, while regions such as Chorasan, Carmania, and Gedrosia evoke the classical geography inherited from antiquity. An especially attractive feature is the decorative title cartouche in the lower left quadrant, adorned with an oriental figure and exotic motifs reflecting European fascination with Safavid Persia and the trade routes of the East. Although issued uncolored, the map possesses a strong graphic quality due to its crisp engraving, dramatic relief work, and balanced composition. Maps of Persia from the 17th century have become increasingly desirable among collectors because of their connection to the Safavid Empire, Silk Road commerce, and early European exploration and scholarship concerning the Islamic world. Cluverius maps are also valued for their historical significance within the development of academic cartography. This example has excellent decorative appeal for interiors focused on classical, Ottoman, Middle Eastern, or library aesthetics. The monochrome engraving works particularly well in dark studies, modern minimalist interiors, or grouped with other Dutch Golden Age maps. Condition: Good antique condition with age-related toning and light wear. Original center fold visible as issued. Minor foxing and handling marks in the margins consistent with age. Strong, dark impression with clear engraved detail throughout. Framing tips: Particularly effective in a dark walnut or black frame with a wide ivory mat for a museum-style presentation. Also highly suitable for pairing with other 17th-century Dutch maps in a gallery wall arrangement. Note: The map is an original antique engraving, not a reproduction. All items we offer are authentic period works of art over 100 years old. The pieces are sold unframed; any framed images are shown for presentation and interior inspiration only and may not always be to scale.
