Published in Paris around 1850 and engraved by Thierry, the map reflects the strong 19th-century European fascination with classical antiquity, ancient empires, and the legacy of Alexander’s conquests. The composition traces the extraordinary geographic reach of the Macedonian Empire at its height following Alexander’s campaigns between 334 and 323 BC. Beginning in Greece and Macedonia, the map extends eastward through Asia Minor, Egypt, Mesopotamia, Persia, Bactria, and northwestern India. Numerous ancient cities, rivers, mountain ranges, and provinces are carefully identified, creating a richly detailed historical document as well as a highly decorative classical map. One of the map’s most attractive features is the network of colored campaign routes delineating Alexander’s military expeditions across the ancient world. These hand-colored lines visually connect the territories conquered during his campaigns and provide the map with both scholarly and aesthetic appeal. The subtle pastel outline coloring and delicate engraved detail are characteristic of refined French historical cartography from the mid-19th century. Historical maps devoted to Alexander the Great became especially popular during the 19th century, when classical education formed an essential part of European intellectual culture. Such maps were used in schools, atlases, and scholarly works to illustrate the rise of one of history’s greatest empires and the spread of Hellenistic civilization across the Near East and Asia. The broad horizontal format and restrained palette give the map exceptional decorative qualities. It works beautifully in studies, libraries, academic interiors, or contemporary spaces inspired by classical history and ancient civilizations. The combination of historical significance and elegant French engraving also makes it highly suitable for collectors of ancient history, military cartography, and classical antiquity.
