The opala midi pendant lamp, originally designed in 1975 by hans j. Wegner for louis poulsen, is a distinctive example of late danish modern lighting design.
developed during a period in which wegner expanded beyond furniture into lighting and interior architecture, the opala series combines soft geometric form with highly functional illumination. The lamp’s broad asymmetrical shade was designed to provide controlled, glare-free downward light while maintaining a sculptural floating appearance when suspended.
produced by louis poulsen in denmark during the 1980s, this example retains the original manufacturer’s label inside the shade and remains unused in its original box.
the opala series is regarded as one of wegner’s most recognisable lighting designs and reflects the refined functionalism associated with danish modernism during the 1970s and 1980s.
